Sandblasting and shot peening services bombard media against a surface to meet surface condition requirements. Sandblasting uses abrasive grain to roughen, smooth, shape or clean surfaces. Shot peening uses rounded media to strengthen or dimple a surface. Search by Specification | Learn More
Heat treating services perform thermal treatments to modify the properties of metals and metal alloys. Common processes include annealing, austempering, case hardening, conventional hardening, homogenizing, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), martempering, normalizing, precipitation hardening, shot peening, solution treating, spheroidizing, stabilizing, and stress relieving. Shot peening is a cold working process in which the surface of a metal part is bombarded with small spherical media called shot. Each piece of shot striking the metal acts as a tiny peening hammer imparting a small indentation or dimple on the surface. In order for the dimple to be created, the surface layer of the metal must yield in tension. (read more)
Metal Improvement Company can perform on-site shot peening of large components whose sizes exceed shipping limitations or which are installed on their foundations. Their field crews perform on-site shot peening worldwide to the same quality standards as their processing centers. (read more)
By pelting the component repeatedly with steel, glass, or ceramic shot, we can increase the fatigue life. The process creates a compressed surface layer which removes any microscopic cracks that could later cause fatigue failure. (read more)
Peen forming is the preferred method of forming aerodynamic contours into aircraft wingskins. It is a dieless forming process that is performed at room temperature. The process is ideal for forming wing and empennage panel shapes for even the largest aircraft. (read more)
The Metal Improvement Company laser peening process uses a unique Nd:glass, high output, high repetition laser combined with precision robotic manipulation. During the laser peening process, the laser is fired at the surface of a metal part to generate pressure pulses of one million pounds per square inch, which send shock waves through the part.
