Cold and Hot Isostatic Pressing Services

Cold and hot isostatic pressing services apply high pressures and/or temperature to form near net shapes, densify parts, diffusion bond materials, remove internal porosity and improve the integrity of engineering components. They perform processes such as casting densification, diffusion bonding, powder consolidation, and turbine component rejuvenation for repairing creep damage. Casting densification is a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process that removes internal porosity and improves the durability of alloy castings. Diffusion bonding is a solid-state joining process that holds pre-machined components at elevated temperatures under loads that will not deform the parent materials. Power consolidation processes that use isostatic compaction vary in terms of compacting pressures and compression ratios. Cold and hot isostatic pressing services that perform related bonding, joining, and consolidation processes are also available.  

Cold and hot isostatic pressing services may offer cold isostatic pressing services such as wet bag processing or free molding, dry bag processing or fixed molding, and warm isostatic pressing (WIP). Cold isostatic pressing or CIP services use a room-temperature compacting process to turn powders into blocks, crucibles, cemented carbides, ceramic insulators, isotropic graphite, refractory nozzles, plastic tubes and rods, tubes for special chemical applications, ferrites, metal filters and preforms. With cold isostatic pressing (CIP), the powder material is placed within a mold and then moved to a CIP processing chamber. A liquid medium, typically an oil-water mixture, is pumped in and pressurized on all sides to create a uniform product. Cold and hot isostatic pressing services that use CIP techniques can create products with greater uniform density, a feature which reduces internal stresses and eliminates cracks, strains and laminations.   

Cold and hot isostatic pressing services that perform HIP processes operate hot isostatic presses (HIP) that use an argon atmosphere heated to 3000 F and pressurized to 100,000 psi. Like CIP pressing services, HIP pressing services process powders and other materials into preformed metal, plastic, and ceramic parts. Cold and hot isostatic pressing services that offer HIP services can process high-performance ceramics, ferrites, and cemented carbides. They can also net-shape form nickel-base super alloys and titanium powders, compact high-speed tool steels, diffusion bond similar and dissimilar materials, and eliminate voids in aerospace castings.
