Machine Shop Services

Machine shop services use specialized equipment and machinery to remove excess material and fabricate finished parts. Some machine shop services specialize in drilling, milling, honing, boring or broaching. Others specialize in grinding, machining, or etching. Grinding services perform centerless, creep feed, double-disc, internal, external, jig or surface grinding to remove excess material. Machining services perform screw machining, Swiss screw machining, laser machining, and electro-discharge machining (EDM) processes to fabricate finished parts. Water or abrasive jet machining services are also available. Specialty machine shop services can cast or forge parts; perform thread grinding or thread rolling operations; or manufacture gears, jigs, fixtures, tools and dies. Electro-chemical machining and photo-chemical machining services can etch unstressed, high-precision parts. CNC machining or micro-machining is required for some operations.

Machine shop services differ in terms of material capabilities, secondary operations, and additional services. Metal materials include aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, nickel, nickel alloys, steel, stainless steel, titanium, precious metals and hardened metals. Non-metal materials include ceramics, glass, composites, quartz, marble, granite, stone and wood. Anodizing, electroplating, heat treating, stress relieving, lapping, polishing, painting, powder coating, and welding are common secondary operations. Machine shop services may also offer CAD/CAM support, design assistance, just-in-time (JIT) delivery, prototyping, low volume production, high volume production and reverse engineering. Computer aided design or drafting (CAD) is used to design products quickly and accurately. Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) is used to fabricate products directly from CAD outputs. 

Machine shop services are located across the United States and around the world. They adhere to a variety of certifications and regulatory standards, including AS 9000, AS 9100, and QS-9000. Machine shop services follow four main quality standards from the International Standards Organization: ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001, ISO 13485:2003, and ISO/TS 16949:2002. Some machine shop services are registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Others comply with military specifications (MIL-SPEC) or military standards (MIL-STD). Machine shop services that provide certifications for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications meet internal corporate specifications or requirements.
