About Metal Spinning Services

Metal spinning services or spin forming services use a positive pressure process in which a rotating tool or roller shapes a spinning sheet metal workpiece. Spinning is accomplished by affixing a preform or blank to a mandrel or chuck on the rotating member of a lathe. The tool used to form the sheet metal is called a spoon. Spoons can be automated (CNC spinning) or guided by a machinist (manual spinning). Flow forming is a specialized spinning process which extrudes preforms over a rotating anvil. The rollers that are used to extrude the material provide a precision method for varying the thickness of the finished shape and/or product as desired over the complete profile. Metal spinning is a metal fabrication process in which flat, round disc of sheet metal (the metal spinner) rotates on a metal spinning lathe. Metal extrusion is used to produce long metal parts such as pipes. The spinning metal used by a spin forming service may include high tensile strength and heat resistant alloys such as aluminum, carbon steel, brass, stainless steel, and copper. Spun metal is used in many applications, including the aerospace and automotive industries. Other metal spinning services are commonly available.

There are several ways in which metal spinning services function. Metal spinning services or spin forming services use a process that produces concentric shapes of metals such as hollow dished, conical, hemispherical, or elliptical. A metal spinning lathe is a machine tool that spins a block of material such that when abrasive, cutting, or deformation tools are applied to the block, they can be shaped to produce an object which has rotational symmetry about an axis of rotation. A metal spinning lathe can produce objects such as crankshafts, camshafts, and table legs. Spinning metal used for this process should be resistant to corrosion and have high strength. Some examples of spun metal specifications include diameters of 1/2" to 48" range, thickness of .010 inch, and are formed from metals such as titanium, copper, or brass. Metal extrusion is done by pressing the metal in a closed cavity through a tool called a die, by using a mechanical or hydraulic press. Metal spinning services are designed and manufactured to meet most industry specifications.
