   Services
   Your choices are...

   Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP)

Isostatic presses utilize a chamber to compact the powder or material placed in a sealed tool, bag or other container.  Cold isostatic presses (CIP) use an oil-water or air mixture pressurized up to 100,000 psi.  Flexible rubber or plastic tooling and steel mandrels are used in CIPing.  CIP applications include refractory nozzles, blocks, and crucibles; cemented carbides, isotropic graphite, ceramic insulators, tubes for special chemical applications, ferrites, metal filters, preforms, and plastic tubes and rods.  In wet bag CIP processing, an oil water medium is used to transmit forces to the bagged tool and powder.  In dry bag CIP processing, the rubber mold and closure are integral with the pressure vessel.  Dry bag CIP is useful for higher speed automated pressing of small parts such as spark plug insulators.  Wet bag CIP is useful for compacting larger parts as well as prototyping small parts.

   Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP)

Hot isostatic presses (HIP) use an argon atmosphere or other gas mixtures heated up to 3000º F and pressurized up to 100,000 psi. Evacuated steel or metal cans or sintered surfaces are used to contain and maintain a seal during HIPing.  HIPs are used for densifying high performance ceramics, ferrites and cemented carbides, net-shape forming of nickel-base superalloy and titanium powders, compacting of high-speed tool steel, diffusion bonding of similar and dissimilar materials, and eliminating voids in aerospace castings or creep damaged blades.

   Sinter HIP

In sinter HIP processing, a powder compact is first sintered or raised to an elevated temperature where diffusion or atomic movement can reduce or eliminate open porosity.  Then, both pressure and heat are applied to sintered part to fully consolidate the material.

   Canning / HIP Tooling

Supplier can design or fabricate and seal carbon steel or metal cans and other HIP tooling and fixtures for consolidation of metal, ceramic or composite powders by hot isostatic processing.

   Decanning / Chemical Milling

Supplier has the facilities remove or strip carbon steel or metal cans from densified compacts after the hot isostatic process.

   CIP Molds / Bagging

Supplier can design or fabricate rubber or elastomer molds, mandrels, bags, tooling and fixtures for consolidation of metal, ceramic or composite powders by cold isostatic processing.

   Powder Preparation / Blending

Supplier has facilities for blending or preparing powders for isostatic processing.

   Diffusion Bonding

Supplier has the expertise or capabilities to diffusion bond parts using HIP techniques. In diffusion bonding or solid state welding, high pressure and temperature are applied across the material to be joined. The materials plastically deform bringing the surfaces into close contact all along the joint. At the elevated temperature, diffusion or atomic movement occurs creating a metallurgical bond without fusion or melting.

   Pressure Brazing

Supplier has the expertise or capabilities to pressure braze together parts or assemblies using HIP techniques.  In pressure brazing, the high pressure drives the braze into gaps where capillary pressure or surface tension effects alone are insufficient.

Applications

   Your choices are...

   Casting Densification

Hot isostatic presses are commonly used to eliminate internal porosity in as-cast components, which improves casting integrity.

   Creep Damage Repair

Hot isostatic pressing can be used to close creep-induced porosity in jet engine or gas turbine components, which improves the life of jet engine blades or other aerospace components.

   Densification / Porosity Removal

Isostatic pressing to densify or close porosity within a powder body, sinter part, joint or casting.

   Graded Compositions / Transition Joints

Graded compositions and transition joints can also be produced using isostatic processing by varying the alloy composition as the can or mold is filled with powders. Properties can be varied in steps or continuously using compositional changes. Transition joints can be manufactured using powder metallurgy techniques to allow joining of metals that cannot be directly fusion welded together.

High Pressure Processing (Foods / Biotech)

High pressure processing (HPP) is used to treat foods, beverages, proteins, enzymes, and potentially other bioactive materials such as pharmaceuticals.  HPP inactivates or destroys food pathogens and spoilage organisms such as bacteria or mold spores; inactivate enzymes that spoils or brown food at lower temperature than heat pasteurization, which preserve food flavor, quality and extend shelf life. High pressure processing can also germinate certain bacterial spores, assist in marinating meats, shuck oysters or separate shellfish, and promote cheese ripening.  High pressure processing of bioactive materials is an active area of research.

Net / Near Net Shape Fabrication

Production of net or near net shape from metal, ceramic or composite powders and/or fibers. Near net shaping reduces the amount of material required to fabricate a part compared to machining the same part from plate, billet or other mill stock forms.  The scrap reduction during near net shape fabrication of expensive titanium, nickel, metal matrix composite, stainless or other aerospace alloy parts can amount to millions of dollars in savings.

   Powder Consolidation

Equipment for the compacting of powders or powdered materials such as alloyed or blended elemental metal powders, ceramic powders or polymer powders.  Tableting or powder compacting presses are used for simple flat or multilevel shaped parts like gears or cams.  Hot or cold isostatic presses are used to produce shapes that are more complex or increase final density.  Graded compositions and transition joints can also be produced using isostatic processing.

   Specialty / Other

Any unlisted, proprietary, or specialized application.

Search Logic:      All products with ANY of the selected attributes will be returned as matches. Leaving all boxes unchecked will not limit the search criteria for this question; products with all attribute options will be returned as matches.
Materials Processed

   Your choices are...

   Aluminum / Magnesium Alloys

Pressing of aluminum or magnesium alloy casting or powders to produce high integrity parts.

   Carbides / Cutting Tools

Carbide or cemented carbide parts and cutting tools are typically fabricated with compacting equipment.  The pressing and sintering process maintains a fine crystal size that improves wear resistance and toughness.  Hot or cold isostatic presses are used to produce shapes that are more complex or to increase final density.

   Carbon / Graphite

Carbon or graphite does not melt and must be compacted into shape along with binders for use in graphite motor brushes or battery components.
